Darth Bane: Path of Destruction takes us back to a thousand years before Emperor Palpatine and the collapse of the Republic. At that time the Sith were legion, and the deadly battles between the Sith and the Jedi were constant. The Sith had leaders, they had an academy to train new followers, and they had vicious infighting. However, they were not as powerful as they thought they should be.

This is then the time when Bane is introduced to the Sith. Originally Bane was known as Dessel. He was raised on the desolate planet Apatros, suffered under the abuse of a hateful father, and eventually scratched out a living as a miner under extreme conditions. Dessel had always known that he had unusual powers, but he had no real understanding of the Force. Through a chain of bad luck, he is forced to flee from Apatros and ends up in the Sith academy learning the ways of the dark side and going by the name of Bane. He proves to be an unusually apt student, and he learns to have no hesitation in using whatever devious and treacherous methods he needs to advance.

As Bane becomes ever more powerful in the use of the Force, he delves deeply into the history of the Sith and becomes convinced that the Sith will never overcome the Jedi until they limit themselves only to two - a leader and an apprentice. Those two can work together in secrecy to undermine the existing government and the Jedi. Darth Bane becomes powerful enough by the end of the book to deal with all of the other Sith, wipe out a number of Jedi, and disappear to begin the evil machinations of the Sith. A thousand years later and after many generations of Sith, we find in Revenge of the Sith that Darth Bane's methods were effective.

Darth Bane: Path of Destruction offers a fascinating look at the early development of the Sith and lays the groundwork for much of what is to come in the world of Star Wars that is so familiar to millions of people. Read the book. Learn about Darth Bane.

Path of Destruction A Novel of the Old Republic Star Wars Darth Bane Drew Karpyshyn 9780345477361 Books Reviews

Okay, so I have to admit up front that I am not a big fan of reading for pleasure, however, the Darth Bane Trilogy had me on the edge of my seat, arguing plot lines with myself in my head, and staying up later than normal just to see what happens in the next chapter. I love all things Star Wars and have played countless Star Wars video games, board games, card games, RPGs and I own a large amount of memorabilia and action figures. First thing, if you've ever played the Knights of the Old Republic video games then just buy these books and trust me when I tell you, you won't regret it. The author, Drew Karpyshyn, was a writer for those video games and these books tie in with a lot of things that happened in the games, which gives the reader a sense of familiarity with the story and the characters involved. Bane himself is just the perfect leading role, hate him one minute, love him the next, hes a legit roller coaster ride of emotion. Since this is just a review for the first book I won't get into anything else story-wise and leave you (the review researcher) with this; I am very picky when it comes to Star Wars and what I think is good for the franchise, these books, are some of the best Star Wars material I've read, seen, heard since The Clone Wars television show started back in 2008. So from one Star Wars fan to another, do yourself a favor and buy this trilogy.
The story of Darth Bane's journey from a cortosis miner with an abusive father to a member of the Dark Brotherhood to reigning Sith Lord is a fascinating, amazingly entertaining read.

Science fiction novels, Star Wars titles especially, can get muddled down with technicality, which appeals to some, but I don't want to read a detailed ship analysis, I am more drawn to stories. Drew Karpyshyn delivers a great story, that also is very important to the overall history of the Brotherhood of Darkness and the history of the Lords of the Sith.

It is well written and compelling, plenty of story, plenty of humanism to pull you in. There are satisfying obligatory battle scenes, constructed really well, and presented in a way that makes you care about the losses and the cost.

One thing I didn't anticipate was my own reaction to the philosophy. I found myself identifying with many of the faults in the Jedi philosophy, their code of honor, strict line of morality and it really helped me understand how some, so skilled, intelligent and capable like Bane, might find themselves on the opposite side of the spectrum.

The characterization is superb, and each has a distinct purpose in the book and I had my favorites and I had those that I despised, yet all were interesting.

I recommend this book to anyone who loves science fiction, being a Star Wars aficionado is not a requirement, you will love this book.
This book is the first Star Wars novel I've picked up and I cannot properly express how exquisitely this book is written. Drew Karpshyn has made this story practically tangible and I can imagine each part of the novel in great detail. The action is unparalled -- both thrilling and clear -- and the twists/psychological capstones of the book are intellectually designed. The stories of the Old Republic make an appearance that is significant to the story, but you really don't need to have played Knights of the Old Republic to know what is going on. Albeit, it is an extremely cool connection you get to make as the reader, knowing of the ancient Sith Lords before even Revan or the Exile. It is such a shame that Disney claims these are no longer canon, but these books are so masterfully made and no matter what they say or do, these books define the true Star Wars universe to me.
