Bruja Born Brooklyn Brujas Book 2 eBook Zoraida Cordova
I’m going to make this as spoiler-free for both Bruja Born AND labyrinth lost as possible…but if you haven’t read labyrinth lost yet, do it!!In Labyrinth Lost, we met Alexandra Mortiz, a reluctant bruja who comes to understand herself, her family, and her power. We also met her sisters, Lula and Rose. The three girls together, the Mortiz sisters, are “[m]agical BAMFs with powers gifted by the Deos,” theirgods.
In Bruja Born, Lula narrates, showing us another side of Alex and Rose, providing a more complete picture of the Mortiz family, their extended family, and coven.
Lula, a healer, is scarred—emotionally and physically—by what she endured in Labyrinth Lost, and Alex, burdened by guilt, is doing everything she can to restore herself, her sisters, and her family to what they were before she discovered she is an Encantrix.
Lula’s biggest reprieve and comfort is her boyfriend Maks, but a bush crash rips him—and all of her classmates—away from her. But as a bruja healer, she has the ability to circumvent fate, so Lula tries to cheat Death. But Death does not like to be cheated, and trying to bend the wills of the Deos is more problematic than Lula and her sisters could have ever imagined.
Bruja Born follows the Mortiz family—and the enigmatic outcast Nova—as they try to both restore comfort to Lula, but also restore balance to their world.
But, as Lula discovers, “no matter how hard we pray or how much we believe, the gods abandon us to ourselves, to the whims of others…Because life is a series of inexplicable accidents and we don’t get to choose the good or the bad.”
Zoraida Cordova reveals the world of the Mortiz sisters—and their magic—to us in a story we all know so well: the story of love, and loss, and what we all wish we could sacrifice to have those we love with us again. But, as they battle the wills of the Deos and their own wishes, the Mortiz girls learn one of the hardest lessons of all when it comes to grief.

Bruja Born Brooklyn Brujas Book 2 eBook Zoraida Cordova Reviews
I loved the first book in the Brooklyn Brujas series, and I found Lula and Rose interesting, but I didn't think Cordova could match Alex and her journey in her second book--I was wrong. In book 2, she follows Lula in an adventure that manages to be even more harrowing and damaging to the world at large than Alex's story was to her own family and another realm. Cordova creates consistently flawed and real characters in the Mortiz girls. Where Alex struggled with her identity as a bruja, Lula struggles with both the changes in her family and the uniquely painful challenge of losing a loved one, and in that, losing oneself. As we follow Lula as she confronts Lady de la Muerte, and works to correct a dangerous mistake, we learn that the first step in healing is learning to love yourself despite the ugly parts we wish to hide. Yet another wonderful adventure--I look forward to seeing where Rose leads us next.
I loved this book. It was wonderful to see all of the Mortiz sisters so empowered--magically and otherwise. The magic is really cool and well-designed. Knowing Alex from Labyrinth Lost let me imagine what she was thinking/feeling throughout, which added this really nice layer. I loved the visual of La Muerte. I found more sympathy for Nova, even after some of his ill-advised choices in Labyrinth Lost. (But what are these books if not about people making choices that backfire and their attempts to then make things better?) One of the most enjoyable things to read was Lula and her journey. She not only had some good character development but was also really interesting to read the perspective of throughout. There are some great twists in this (like something we learn about a particular bruja's power) and it's a fun and immersive read punctuated with beautifully crafted lines. I'm going to need to find more space on my favorites shelf.
Bruja Born was beautiful and tragic. It was full of emotion, magic, and the undead. I think I loved it even more than Labyrinth Lost! There was never a dull moment, and I definitely could not get enough of it!
I adored getting a story from Lula’s point of view! Being known as the beautiful one of the family, she had a few issues to work through after being scarred from Alex’s mistake, and losing her sense of self confidence. She really went through an emotional change and grew, in power, and within herself.
This one was definitely emotional. From the first few chapters my heart was hurting. I was feeling for Lula and hoping she could see the beauty inside herself, even if she couldn’t see it outside herself. Her journey of self discovery really touched me and highlighted the strength and courage of all the Mortiz sisters. Once again, Zoraida portrayed the importance of love, family, and inner strength through the Mortiz’s!
I had seen many people saying that they thought this was a companion novel. I would have to disagree. I truly believe reading Labyrinth Lost first helps understand the story in so many ways. It also helps feel closer to the Mortiz sisters and really get a sense of the power they hold. Reading book 1 is definitely worth it to be able to read this one. It allows you to see how Zoraida continues to build and shape the world she created along with developing all the characters and their powers!
Bruja Born continued to build and develop the world of the Brooklyn Brujas. It continued to show how the Mortiz sisters, and their families, grew and changed from everything that happened in Labyrinth Lost. In book 1, Alex grew in power, learned things about herself, and learned some very important life lessons. Book 2 was the same for Lula. And, with these changes and lessons, the whole family has been affected. The whole world has changed and shifted, and I’m excited to see what this all has meant for book 3!
I’m going to make this as spoiler-free for both Bruja Born AND labyrinth lost as possible…but if you haven’t read labyrinth lost yet, do it!!
